“You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
Luke 12:40 NRSVUE
Beloved,
I could never have believed that I was ready. How can we be ready to let go of our joy? Like the Son of Man, eternity called for you at an hour I did not expect.
Nevertheless, I am grateful. On the last day, never imagining it would be our last together, there was ordinary joy.
We held hands, as we often did.
We laughed softly.
We didn’t behave like goodbye, because we couldn’t know what we didn’t know.
We livied our last day together in ordinary joy, and I thank God for it. It has sustained me in the 12 months since.
Our children remind me of you.
Music reminds me of you; as does silence.
Quietly, you inhabit my days, and slip into my dreams. I feel you there, but only gently.
Thank you for your lingering tenderness. It makes the weight of your departure easier to bear. It will never be easy, but I will bear it nonetheless.
