Morning Devotional
I talked to God today….(a memory and lesson from 2014)
Oh relax, I’m not crazy, and I talk to God often, but this is different, and I wanted to share the story with you.
It had already been a good day; I’d been productive at work, an anticipated conversation went better than expected, and I was on my way to troll the aisles of the grocery store for inspiration for dinner (don’t judge, at least it wasn’t take out or something frozen…I was making the effort to cook.) Anyway…
When I left home, I wrestled my locs into a high on my head ponytail à la Pebbles and Bam-Bam that was more functional than fashionable. I was about to head for the checkout when I heard a tiny voice say, “ look at you, flaunting all that long hair.” I turned to see a frail, caramel colored woman with stark white hair under a black knit cap. I laughed at her teasing, and she continued. I told her it wasn’t all that long, and that she should see the length I’d cut off. “Go get it,” she whispered conspiratorially, “and bring it back for me.” I laughed again. We started talking, and I thanked and blessed her for making my day. She explained, “I go with Jesus. Jesus wants us to laugh, and when we do, we are blessed.” I didn’t dare ask her age, but told her she was just what I wanted to be when I grew up. She laughed again and told me she was only 96. She reminded me of my granny, which I told her, to a great big and warm smile. She asked my granny’s name, and then made me promise to tell her that Dorothy would be praying for her. We chatted a couple extra minutes and then went our separate ways.
I talked to God in the grocery store today. For just a few minutes today, I experienced a unique worship, and I haven’t any idea who was blessing whom; it didn’t matter, either…that’s how I knew it was a God thing. The Bible instructs us to honor our elders. We should be present. We should pray continually to be available to do God’s Will. In the grocery store, I think I got it right. Lord, I am praying to stay open, to stay available. Thank You. You blessed me richly. In the grocery store. In the milk aisle. Amen
“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord Your God is giving you. : Exodus 20:12 (NIV)
Lord, I am praying to stay open, to stay available. Thank You. You blessed me richly. In the grocery store. In the milk aisle.
Amen
This story means so much because I was reminded of it during a conversation with a college classmate of 40 years, so I dug it out of my archives. Reading it again, I was reminded that my beloved Gram lived to be 96, and she is blessing me again in this moment.
